Unlocking Wood’s Potential through Thermal Modification in an IWT-Moldrup Modification Plant

Cost-Effective Closed Process: Our Thermal Modification process is not only cost-effective but also operates as a closed system. This means lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact, making it a sustainable choice for wood modification.

Lower Temperature, Remarkable Results: Unlike traditional open processes, the IWT-Moldrup thermal modification process takes place in a closed autoclave at lower temperatures. This helps conserve energy, reduce wood degradation, and produce a less brittle final product.

Improved Dimensional Stability: Thermal treatment enhances the dimensional stability of wood by 30% to 50%. This means your wood products are less prone to warping or shrinking due to environmental changes.

Increased Resistance to Wood Deterioration:  Our Thermal Modification process provides wood with a natural defense. It becomes more resistant to wood-destroying fungi.

Attractive Warm Brown Color:  Wood that undergoes Thermal Modification develops a beautiful warm brown color. This aesthetic transformation makes it ideal for various applications where visual appeal matters.

No Chemicals or Biocides: We’re proud to offer a wood modification process that’s entirely free from chemicals or biocides.

Improved Heat Insulation: Thermal treatment enhances wood’s heat insulation properties by 5% to 15%. This makes it valuable in construction and other applications requiring insulation, such as heated flooring.

Flexible Application: Our Thermal Modification process can be applied to various wood species, thicknesses, and grades, making it versatile for a wide range of projects.

Advantages & Considerations of a Thermal Modification Supplied by IWT-Moldrup

Fast and Efficient

Our thermal modification plants come in various capacities, ranging from entry-level models of 500 m³/year (approximately 211,000 bdf/year) to large-volume models of 7,500 m³/year (approximately 3.18 million bdf/year) per unit. This process is remarkably efficient, making it 2–7 times faster than conventional processes.

Lower Operating Temperatures

Unlike other thermal modification equipment suppliers using open systems, our thermal modification plant process takes place at process temperatures 20–30°C (36–54°F) lower. This not only reduces energy consumption but also minimizes the risk of overheating or burning the wood.

Environmental Benefits

Our thermal modification plants are available with an emission-free option, which reduces energy consumption and prevents vapor releases, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The incineration of vapors and liquids is part of this process, helping ensure no harmful emissions or wastewater.

Improved Wood Properties

The thermal treatment enhances wood properties significantly. It results in increased dimensional stability (up to 50% improvement), a pleasant brown color, and reduced equilibrium moisture content by 50%. It also improves heat insulation.

Considerations:

While the thermal modification process used in our plants offers several advantages, it’s important to note that it may have limited or no protection against termites. Additionally, it’s not UV-resistant and should not be used in ground contact or load-bearing constructions.

If you’re looking for an efficient and environmentally friendly thermal modification solution, the closed-type process developed by IWT-Moldrup is an excellent choice. Contact us for more information and pricing options.
